GOVT COMMITS TO PAY FARMERS WHO SUPPLIED MAIZE TO FRA

President Hakainde Hichilema has assured farmers who supplied maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) that government remains fully committed to settling out standing payments as soon as possible.

Addressing journalists at State House in Lusaka, President Hichilema said government has already made significant progress in mobilizing the required funds.

President Hichilema emphasized that timely payment to farmers will enable them to purchase farming inputs and plant without delay.

He expressed regret over the delayed disbursements and reaffirmed government’s determination to clear all pending dues and restore farmer confidence in the maize marketing system.

“We have and still mobilizing the required funds through banks will ensure that every farmer who supplied maize to FRA will be paid, no one will be left behind. These payments must be released quickly so that our farmers can buy farming inputs and plant on time,” explained President Hichilema.

The President also urged citizens to invest in solar energy and irrigation technologies to boost productivity and cushion the country against persistent power and climate-related challenges.

“Increased private investment in alternative energy and water management systems will help to stabilize food production throughout the year. Embracing such innovations is key to strengthening the country’s food and nutrition security as well as incomes,” said President Hichilema.

He emphasized the need for Zambians to have productive minds if the country was to attain its developmental agenda and enhance the country Gross Domestic Product(GDP).

Meanwhile, President Hichilema encouraged every Zambian household to cultivate at least one acre of maize in the 2025–2026 farming season, noting that a single acre can provide enough food to sustain a family until the next harvest.

He said this collective effort will not only enhance household food security but also reduce pressure on national reserves.

The President stressed that increased maize production at community level is essential in building a more resilient and self-reliant nation.

He further urged citizens to prepare early, organize inputs and take farming seriously as a pathway to economic empowerment.

“Ife very household commits to cultivating just one acre of maize, we can secure our own food, ease pressure on national reserves, build a stronger and more resilient Zambia. Let us prepare early, organize our farming inputs and take farming seriously, this is because agriculture remains one of the most powerful pathways to economic empowerment,” Indicated President Hichilema. - NAIS
