Why Phytosanitary Certification Holds the Key to Global Markets

SMALL-SCALE farmers seeking to participate in regional and international markets have been urged to prioritise compliance with phytosanitary requirements to protect their produce from rejection and losses during export.

The Plant Quarantine and Phytosanitary Services (PQPS) under the Ministry of Agriculture says obtaining the correct documentation before exporting agricultural products is essential in ensuring smooth movement of consignments and meeting international trade requirements.

Jill Musonda, Senior Technical Plant Health Inspector under PQPS, said the department was working with farmers to help them understand export procedures, inspections and documentation required before their produce can access external markets.

“We are encouraging small-scale farmers to approach us. We are here and ready to assist them through the checks and inspections required by the authorities so that farmers understand what they are supposed to do and how they can acquire the necessary documents,” She said.
